When Walter A. Koelbel founded Koelbel and Company as a residential brokerage company in 1952, he had only a map, slide rule, and business degree from the University of Colorado to supplement his vision. Koelbel wanted to capitalize on the revolutionary changes being brought about by growing automobile use and expanding highway systems that would carry more and more people outside the city limits.
Anticipating that growth would proceed along the expanding roadway system, Koelbel began acquiring properties along those paths. These included acquisitions along the I-25 corridor southeast of downtown Denver and in Cherry Hills Village, an affluent area just south of the city. These investments placed Koelbel and Company solidly at the forefront of new real estate developments and exciting growth of Denver, Colorado.
Within a few years, Koelbel also began development plans for his flagship property, Pinehurst Country Club and Pinehurst Estates, several miles southwest of Denver. This project was the first master-planned residential golf course community along Colorado's Front Range and, with the natural beauty of the golf course as the neighborhood's center, laid the groundwork for Koelbel's future philosophy of building communities around distinguishing natural features.
After a half a century, Koelbel and Company continues to be a Colorado family-owned business—now thriving under the leadership of Walter's son, Walter A. "Buz" Koelbel, Jr. The company has grown into a full service real estate company with developed properties spanning from Vail and Winter Park to Louisville and Denver. With communities that blend ageless values with pacesetting design, the company continues to place its indelible mark on the Colorado landscape.
